Archival Overview
Sixth Idrisid Sultan who came from the northern province of the Rif to restore order in Fez in 866 AD, reigning with prudence until 883 AD.
Biographical Record
Ali ibn Umar was the grandson of Moulay Idris II and governed the northern maritime provinces of the Rif and Tangier. When civil disturbances broke out in the capital city of Fez following the death of Yahya II in 866 AD, the tribal elders and ulema invited Ali ibn Umar to assume the supreme sultanate.
He stabilized the capital, reconciled disputing factions, and promoted extensive agricultural irrigation in the surrounding valleys. His long seventeen-year reign provided a period of cultural peace and prosperity that consolidated Morocco's early Islamic statehood.
