Archival Overview
Almoravid governor of Granada who fortified the Alhambra citadel and led the defense of southern Andalusia against King Alfonso I of Aragon.
Biographical Record
Ali ibn Inal was a senior Sanhaja commander who governed the mountainous province of Granada under Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf. Known for his tactical prudence and fortifications engineering, he reinforced the ancient walls of the Albaicín and the Alcazaba of Granada.
In 1125, when King Alfonso I of Aragon (the Battler) launched his deep raid across Andalusia, Ali ibn Inal mobilized his Moroccan garrison and Andalusian volunteers, denying the invaders entry to Granada and forcing the Aragonese army into a catastrophic winter retreat.
