Beloved Sudanese author, master short story writer, and literary translator who captured the urban soul of Omdurman, translated James Baldwin and Langston Hughes into Arabic, and presided over the Sudanese Writers Union.
Biographical Record
Born in the historic capital of Omdurman, Ali El-Makk graduated from the University of Khartoum and earned his Master's in public administration from the University of Southern California. A passionate champion of African and Afro-Arab cultural dialogue, he translated masterpieces of the Harlem Renaissance into lyrical Arabic.
His short story collections (Al-Farouq al-Thani, Madinat min Turab) celebrated the bohemian cafés, folk musicians, and working-class families along the Nile. As Director of Khartoum University Press and President of the Sudanese Writers Union, his witty humanism made him one of Sudan's most revered modern cultural icons.
