Archival Overview
Brilliant Algerian lawyer, intellectual, and human rights champion whose torture and assassination by French paratroopers during the Battle of Algiers became a worldwide symbol of colonial brutality.
Biographical Record
Ali Boumendjel was a brilliant young attorney at the Court of Appeal in Algiers and a passionate member of the World Peace Council. Believing in universal justice, he courageously defended Algerian nationalist militants facing colonial military tribunals.
During the brutal Battle of Algiers in February 1957, he was arrested by paratroopers of General Massu's division. Subjected to more than a month of savage torture under Commander Paul Aussaresses, he was thrown to his death from the sixth floor of an El Biar building, falsely reported as suicide until official French state admission in 2021.
