Archival Overview
Supreme Admiral of the Algiers corsair fleet in the early 17th century, who married Princess Lalla Lalla-Houm and built the historic Ali Bitchin Mosque in the Casbah in 1622.
Biographical Record
Rais Ali Bitchin (born Piccinino) converted to Islam in his youth and rose through maritime daring and tactical genius to become the Grand Admiral (Reis-ul-Bahr) of the fleet of Algiers. Commanding dozens of galleons and galleys, he dominated western Mediterranean sea lanes and commanded supreme prestige across North Africa and the Levant.
In 1622, as a pledge of love to win the hand of the noble Algerian princess Lalla Lalla-Houm (daughter of Sultan Ben El Kadi of the Kingdom of Koukou), Ali Bitchin constructed the magnificent Ali Bitchin Mosque at the foot of the Casbah of Algiers, an architectural gem of Ottoman-Maghrebi synthesis that still stands today.
