Archival Overview
Andalusian noble commander from Granada who crossed to Morocco following the fall of Granada in 1492, rebuilt the ruined city of Tetouan, and constructed its formidable defensive ramparts and Kasbah.
Biographical Record
A military commander of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada who governed the castle of Piñar, Sidi Ali al-Mandri led thousands of Andalusian refugee families across the Mediterranean into northern Morocco. In 1484, with authorization from Wattasid Sultan Muhammad al-Sheikh, he selected the strategic ruin of Tetouan.
He reconstructed Tetouan into an Andalusian architectural jewel, designing stone fortifications, subterranean water aqueducts, and the central Kasbah. His city became a flourishing haven for exiled Moriscos and Jewish craftsmen, remaining Morocco's premier Andalusian city.
