Archival Overview

14th-century Moroccan chronicler and topographer whose foundational monograph Zahrat al-As provides the definitive historical and architectural inventory of medieval Fez.

Biographical Record

Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Jazna'i belonged to the Berber tribe of Gzenaya settled in Fez. Observing the monumental architectural and civic flowering of the city under the Marinid sultans, he composed Zahrat al-As fi Bina Madinat Fas (The Myrtle Flower on the Foundation of the City of Fez).

His work meticulously catalogs the number of mosques, waterwheels, mills, baths, markets, and madrasas in 14th-century Fez, making it the most authoritative primary reference for medieval Moroccan urban geography and social history.
