Archival Overview
Monumental Iranian lexicographer and satirist who dedicated forty-five years to compiling the encyclopedic fifteen-volume 'Loghat-nameh Dehkhoda'.
Biographical Record
Mirza Ali-Akbar Qazvini, titled Allameh Dehkhoda, was born in Tehran and studied law and political science, serving in the Iranian embassy in Vienna. During the 1906 Constitutional Revolution, he co-founded the legendary newspaper Sur-e Esrafil, writing the brilliant satirical column 'Charand-o Parand' (Nonsense and Babble), which transformed modern Persian political journalism.
Following the bombardment of parliament, Dehkhoda fled into exile in Switzerland and Paris. Returning to Iran, he spent forty-five years compiling Loghat-nameh Dehkhoda, the most comprehensive dictionary and encyclopedia of the Persian language ever created, spanning over twenty-six thousand pages and three million citations, alongside his four-volume dictionary of proverbs Amsal-o Hekam.
