Alfredo Di Stéfano

Alfredo Di Stéfano was born in Barracas, Buenos Aires, into an Italian-Argentine family. Beginning his professional career with River Plate, Di Stéfano was nicknamed 'La Saeta Rubia' (The Blond Arrow) for his fair hair and blistering speed. During the Argentine players' strike of 1949, he moved to Millonarios of Bogotá in Colombia, starring in the legendary 'Ballet Azul' that dazzled crowds across South America.

In 1953, following an intense transfer tug-of-war between Barcelona and Real Madrid, Di Stéfano joined Real Madrid under President Santiago Bernabéu. His arrival catalyzed the greatest golden era in club football history. Di Stéfano was the ultimate all-around footballer: he defended in his own penalty box, orchestrated midfield buildup, and finished with deadly accuracy in the attacking third.

Under Di Stéfano's leadership, Real Madrid won eight Spanish league championships and the first five editions of the European Champion Clubs' Cup from 1956 to 1960, culminating in the 7-3 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt at Hampden Park in 1960, where Di Stéfano scored a hat-trick alongside Ferenc Puskás's four goals. Awarded the Ballon d'Or in 1957 and 1959, he was later bestowed the unique 'Super Ballon d'Or' in 1989 by France Football as the greatest player of the preceding three decades.
