Biographical Record

Alfonsina Storni (1892–1938) worked as a seamstress, rural schoolteacher, and single mother in Buenos Aires, writing trenchant journalism under male pseudonyms. Her poems, including 'Tu me quieres blanca' and 'Hombre pequenito', attacked the double standards imposed upon women by conservative Argentine society.

Her later work evolved into darker, experimental surrealism ('Mundo de siete pozos'). Confronting debilitating cancer, she composed her haunting farewell poem 'Voy a dormir' ('I Am Going to Sleep') before stepping into the sea at Mar del Plata.
