Archival Overview
Montreal-born founder of the Group of Seven who bridged French and English Canadian art, traveling thousands of miles by snowshoe and boxcar to paint the rural villages of Charlevoix and the Arctic.
Biographical Record
Jackson studied painting at the Académie Julian in Paris before joining Tom Thomson and Lawren Harris in Toronto. Serving as an official Canadian war artist in WWI, he captured the shattered mudscapes of the Western Front before returning to co-found the Group of Seven in 1920.
Known affectionally as 'Père Raquette' (Father Snowshoe) in rural Quebec, Jackson traveled on snowshoes through Charlevoix and the St. Lawrence shores each winter, painting beloved colorful canvases of sleighs and snowbound barns. He was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
