Biographical Record

Alexander Schmorell was born in Orenburg, Russia, to a German father and Russian mother, moving to Munich as a child. While studying medicine at the Ludwig Maximilian University, he and his close friend Hans Scholl founded the clandestine 'White Rose' resistance group in 1942.

Schmorell co-authored the White Rose leaflets denouncing Nazi atrocities and painted anti-Hitler slogans on Munich city walls. Arrested following Hans and Sophie Scholl's detention, he was sentenced to death by Roland Freisler's People's Court and executed by guillotine at Stadelheim Prison.
