Alexander Alekhine was born into a wealthy Moscow family and emerged as a prodigy in pre-revolutionary Russia. Emigrating to France after the Russian Revolution, he combined exhaustive opening scholarship with an unequaled genius for dazzling, deeply calculated tactical sacrifices.
In 1927 in Buenos Aires, Alekhine stunned the chess world by defeating the seemingly invincible Jose Raul Capablanca to become World Champion. He held the crown from 1927 to 1935 and from 1937 until his death in 1946, creating enduring theoretical innovations like Alekhine's Defense.
