Aleksandr Ivanovich Oparin (1894–1980) formulated in 1924 the revolutionary hypothesis that life on Earth was not an unexplainable miracle, but the natural evolutionary consequence of organic chemical synthesis. He showed that simple hydrocarbons and ammonia could yield coacervate droplets possessing primitive metabolic properties.
His theoretical model inspired the historic 1952 Miller-Urey experiment, cementing prebiotic chemistry as a legitimate empirical science. Oparin directed the Bakh Institute of Biochemistry in Moscow for over three decades.
