Inspiring Flemish Romantic poet and student leader, mentored by Guido Gezelle, whose fiery verse and epic drama Gudrun ignited the late nineteenth-century Flemish cultural renaissance before his tragic death at age 23.
Biographical Record
Studying at the Minor Seminary in Roeselare under priest-poet Hugo Verriest, Rodenbach spearheaded the 'Blauwvoeterie' youth movement, adopting the blue-footed petrel (blauwvoet) as the symbol of Flemish spiritual defiance against francophone assimilation.
While studying law at Leuven, he established the General Flemish Student Union and wrote lyrical poems that became national anthems, including Het Kerelslied and De Blauwvoet. His untimely death from consumption in 1880 made him the eternal romantic icon of Flemish youth.
