Biographical Record

Albertina Sisulu trained as a nurse and midwife at Johannesburg General Hospital and married Walter Sisulu in 1944, with Nelson Mandela serving as best man. Joining the ANC Women's League, she participated in the historic 1956 Women's March against the pass laws.

While her husband was imprisoned for twenty-six years on Robben Island, Albertina endured continuous banning orders, arrests, and solitary confinement while raising their children and leading underground resistance. In 1983, she was elected co-president of the United Democratic Front (UDF), uniting millions against apartheid.
