Archival Overview
Belgian Parnassian and Symbolist poet whose 1884 poetic masterwork Pierrot Lunaire: Rondels bergamasques achieved worldwide immortality when set to groundbreaking modernist music by Arnold Schoenberg.
Biographical Record
Studying law at the University of Leuven before turning to journalism in Brussels, Giraud was a co-founder of La Jeune Belgique. He championed strict Parnassian form and exquisite poetic musicality against free verse innovations.
In 1884, he published Pierrot Lunaire, a cycle of fifty rondels depicting the tragic, moonlight-crazed commedia dell'arte clown Pierrot. Translated into German by Otto Erich Hartleben, twenty-one of Giraud's poems were set to music by Arnold Schoenberg in his revolutionary 1912 expressionist masterpiece (Op. 21).
