Archival Overview
Legendary Flemish cyclist known as 'Iron Briek', double World Road Champion (1948, 1950), two-time winner of the Tour of Flanders, and iconic embodiment of Flemish endurance through wind, mud, and cobblestones.
Biographical Record
Born on a modest farm in Kanegem, Schotte was famous for his ferocious grit and punishing training through North Sea storms. He won the grueling Tour of Flanders in 1942 and 1948, competing in the 'Ronde' twenty consecutive times—a record of heroic perseverance.
Schotte captured two World Road Championship rainbow jerseys (Valkenburg 1948, Moorslede 1950) and finished second overall in the 1948 Tour de France. In an extraordinary poetical coincidence, he passed away peacefully on the morning of the 2004 Tour of Flanders as riders rolled past his statue in Kanegem.
