Archival Overview
Celebrated Israeli-Moroccan fashion designer who revitalized historic French couture house Lanvin during a dazzling fourteen-year tenure (2001–2015), famed for making women feel radiant, elegant, and comfortable.
Biographical Record
Albert Elbaz was born in Casablanca, Morocco, and moved with his family to Holon, Israel, as a child. After studying at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design in Ramat Gan, he arrived in New York in the mid-1980s with $800, working for seven years under Geoffrey Beene before moving to Paris to lead Guy Laroche and Yves Saint Laurent's Rive Gauche ready-to-wear.
In 2001, Elbaz was appointed creative director of Lanvin, France's oldest fashion house. Over fourteen years, he transformed Lanvin into a global powerhouse, dressing Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, and Natalie Portman with raw-edged silks, playful ruffles, and jewel-toned elegance that celebrated women's bodies. After a five-year hiatus, he launched his inclusive luxury label AZ Factory in early 2021, months before his tragic passing from COVID-19.
