Archival Overview

Founder of the Konbaung Dynasty who rose from a village headman to reunite Burma for the third time, founded the modern city of Yangon (Rangoon), and drove out French and British colonial outposts.

Biographical Record

Aung Zeya (Alaungpaya, 1714–1760) was a humble village chief in Moksobo (Shwebo) when the rival Mon Restored Hanthawaddy Kingdom sacked Ava in 1752, ending the Toungoo Dynasty. Refusing to submit, Alaungpaya raised a peasant resistance army.

He crushed the Hanthawaddy forces, reunited all of Burma, and captured Dagon in 1755, renaming it Yangon ('End of Strife'). He wiped out French and British armed trading forts for violating neutrality, establishing the Konbaung Dynasty that ruled Burma until the British conquest in 1885.
