Biographical Record
Educated at the IDHEC film school in Paris, Resnais achieved international acclaim with his devastating 1956 documentary Nuit et Brouillard (Night and Fog), combining black-and-white liberation footage of Nazi concentration camps with Jean Cayrol's poetic narration.
In 1959, he directed his feature debut Hiroshima mon amour with screenplay by Marguerite Duras, breaking chronological narrative with fluid streams of personal memory and collective trauma. His 1961 Last Year at Marienbad (screenplay by Alain Robbe-Grillet) won the Golden Lion in Venice, influencing cinema worldwide for sixty years.
