Towering 17th-century Moroccan intellectual, Sufi philosopher, and grammarian from the Middle Atlas who famously confronted Sultan Moulay Ismail with letters defending justice and the rights of subjects.
Biographical Record
Al-Hasan ibn Mas'ud al-Yusi was born into the Ait Youssi Berber tribe in the Middle Atlas Mountains. Traveling across southern zawiyas in the Dades and Souss, he became the undisputed master of rhetoric, logic, and theology of his era, teaching at the celebrated Zawiya Dila'iyya.
When Sultan Moulay Ismail established his centralized military rule, al-Yusi became his intellectual sparring partner. In his famous 'Epistle to Moulay Ismail' (Al-Risala al-Yusiyya), he boldly rebuked the absolute monarch for fiscal tyranny, setting an enduring North African benchmark for prophetic intellectual courage.
