Archival Overview
Twelfth Idrisid ruler who built the mountain fortress capital of Hajar an-Nasr (The Eagle's Rock) and maintained Moroccan independence against the Umayyads and Fatimids.
Biographical Record
Al-Qasim Gannun was a resilient Idrisid prince who preserved Moroccan sovereignty during the brutal geopolitical clash between the Umayyad Caliphate of Cordoba and the Fatimid Empire of Ifriqiya. Building the nearly impregnable cliff-top mountain fortress of Hajar an-Nasr in the Rif mountains, he established a thriving independent principality.
From 937 until his death in 948 AD, Al-Qasim Gannun governed northern Morocco with exceptional diplomatic skill, ensuring the survival of the Idrisid lineage and cultural autonomy. His descendants, known as the Banu Gannun, continued to rule the northern valleys for generations.
