Founder of the Saadian dynasty, proclaimed sovereign by the Sous tribes in 1511 to organize the armed resistance against Portuguese fortresses on the Atlantic coast.
Biographical Record
Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Qaim was a Sharifian leader from the Draa valley. In 1511, faced with Portuguese expansionism capturing Safi, Azemmour, and Agadir, the tribal confederations and Sufi brotherhoods of the Sous swore allegiance to him as their military commander.
He unified southern Morocco, mobilized tribal levies, and laid the foundations of the gunpowder army that his sons Ahmad al-Araj and Mohammed ash-Sheikh would lead to expel the Portuguese and conquer Marrakesh and Fez.
