Archival Overview

Preeminent Maliki jurist, traditionist, and historian who served as Grand Qadi of Ceuta and Granada, authored the world-famous devotion 'Ash-Shifa', and is venerated among the Seven Saints of Marrakech.

Biographical Record

Ayyad ibn Musa al-Yahsubi (1083–1149) was born in Ceuta and studied under the greatest masters of Cordoba and Murcia. Renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence and Hadith sciences, he was appointed Chief Qadi of Ceuta at age thirty-five and later Chief Qadi of Granada under the Almoravids.

Al-Qadi Ayyad authored over twenty monumental works, foremost among them Kitab ash-Shifa bi Ta'rif Huquq al-Mustafa (Healing through the Recognition of the Rights of the Chosen One), the most widely read and revered biographical and theological treatise on the Prophet Muhammad in the Islamic world. His Tartib al-Madarik remains the definitive biographical dictionary of the Maliki school.
