Poet laureate and Grand Vizier of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, renowned for his dazzling rhymed prose and his official monumental chronicle Manahil al-Safa.
Biographical Record
Abd al-Aziz al-Fishtali was the foremost literary figure of the Moroccan Renaissance during the Saadian Golden Age. Appointed head of the royal chancery (Diwan al-Insha) by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur, his eloquence was described by contemporaries as turning Arabic into spun gold.
His master historical chronicle, Manahil al-Safa fi Ma'athir Mawalina al-Shurafa, provides an insider's rich account of the Battle of the Three Kings, the conquest of Timbuktu, and the diplomatic exchanges between Morocco, Queen Elizabeth I of England, and the Sublime Porte.
