Archival Overview
Supreme Grand Vizier and diplomatic master of Cairo whose exquisite Arabic epistolary prose directed Saladin's empire, celebrated by Saladin: 'Do not think I conquered the realms by my swords, but by the pen of al-Qadi al-Fadil.'
Biographical Record
Abu Ali Abd al-Rahim al-Baysani, titled Al-Qadi al-Fadil (The Virtuous Judge), moved to Cairo where his astonishing mastery of Arabic rhetoric, diplomatic correspondence, and administrative jurisprudence elevated him to Head of the Royal Chancery under Sultan Saladin.
For thirty years, he drafted every major imperial decree, peace treaty with European crusaders, and diplomatic letter from Cairo, founding the famed Madrasa al-Fadiliyya and its library of 100,000 manuscripts. Saladin famously declared that al-Qadi al-Fadil's eloquence was more decisive than an army of horsemen.
