Archival Overview
Celebrated Mamluk Sultan whose third reign (1310-1341) represented the golden zenith of Mamluk Egypt, characterized by unprecedented economic affluence, massive urbanization, and decisive military victory over the Mongol Ilkhanate at Marj al-Saffar.
Biographical Record
Ascending the throne as a child and surviving two depositions, Al-Nasir Muhammad reclaimed power in 1310 with absolute authority. In 1303, at age eighteen, he personally led his army to crush the Mongols at Marj al-Saffar, halting their westward invasions forever.
He transformed Cairo into a magnificent global metropolis, financing over thirty major mosques, palaces, canals, and markets. He dug the Khalij canal to expand the city and commissioned the iconic Green Dome of the Citadel and the Mosque of Sultan al-Nasir.
