Biographical Record
Al-Mu'izz ibn Ziri was the supreme chieftain of the Maghrawa Berber confederation. Seizing control of Fez during the turbulent rivalry between the Umayyads of Cordoba and the Fatimids, he established a stable and autonomous emirate that governed northern Morocco for three decades.
He reconstructed the stone ramparts of Fez, revitalized the irrigation canals of the Sebou river valley, and established religious madrasas that welcomed thousands of Andalusian scholars and artisans escaping the Fitna of Al-Andalus.
