Archival Overview

Celebrated 10th-century historian and geographer known as the 'Herodotus of the Arabs', author of The Meadows of Gold.

Biographical Record

Al-Masudi was one of the most widely traveled scholars and prolific chroniclers of the Islamic Golden Age. Born in Baghdad, he spent decades voyaging through Persia, India, Sri Lanka, the East African coast, the Caspian shores, and Syria, gathering firsthand anthropological, geographic, and historical observations.

His magnum opus, Muruj al-Dhahab wa-Ma'adin al-Jawhar (The Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems), combined universal history, social customs, folklore, and scientific geography into an encyclopedic narrative of unmatched vitality. Al-Masudi emphasized empirical observation and comparative cultural analysis long before modern historiography.
