Archival Overview
Immense North African historian, literary scholar, and mufti who studied in Tlemcen and Fez before authoring 'Nafh al-Tib' in Cairo—the monumental encyclopedia of Andalusian Islamic civilization.
Biographical Record
Ahmed al-Maqqari was born in Tlemcen to an illustrious scholarly family. Moving to Morocco in 1600, he was welcomed at the court of Saadian Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur in Marrakech and appointed Grand Imam and Mufti of the prestigious University of al-Qarawiyyin in Fez.
In 1618, he embarked on pilgrimage to Mecca and settled in Cairo. Urged by scholars of Damascus, he wrote 'Nafh al-Tib min Ghusn al-Andalus al-Ratib', an epic history of Moorish Spain and the biography of its greatest vizier-poet Lisan al-Din ibn al-Khatib. The book remains the supreme primary source for Islamic Spain in world literature.
