Purchased as a young Kipchak Mamluk, Qalawun rose to senior command under Baybars before seizing the sultanate in 1279. In 1281, his tactical generalship routed a massive Mongol invasion army at Homs, securing the eastern frontier.
In 1289, he conquered Tripoli, terminating nearly two centuries of Crusader rule. His architectural masterpiece, the Qalawun Complex on Al-Mu'izz Street, featured an exquisite madrasa, mausoleum, and a revolutionary free hospital (Maristan) that treated patients regardless of race or creed.
