Archival Overview
Hammadid Emir who completed the transfer of the imperial capital to coastal Bejaia (En-Nasiriya), transforming it into a legendary maritime hub of mathematics, trade, and learning.
Biographical Record
Al-Mansur ibn Nasir succeeded his father Al-Nasir as ruler of the Hammadid Empire in 1088 CE. Recognizing the rising threat of the nomadic Banu Hilal tribes inland, Al-Mansur decisively completed the relocation of the imperial capital to the Mediterranean seaport of Bejaia (renamed En-Nasiriya).
Under his visionary patronship, Bejaia became known as the 'Pearl of the Mediterranean'. He built spectacular coastal palaces, defensive sea gates, botanical gardens, and naval shipyards, attracting scholars, merchants, and scientists from across Andalusia, Italy, and the East.
