Archival Overview
Second Zirid ruler of Ifriqiya (984–995 AD) who made Sabra al-Mansuriya outside Kairouan his magnificent capital, successfully asserting autonomy from Fatimid Cairo.
Biographical Record
Al-Mansur succeeded his father Buluggin ibn Ziri in 984 AD as Viceroy of Ifriqiya on behalf of the Fatimid Caliphs now reigning in Cairo. A monarch of fierce independent will, al-Mansur publicly proclaimed to the people of Kairouan: 'I am not one of those who are appointed by a decree or dismissed by a letter; my father inherited this realm by the sword!'
He held court at Sabra al-Mansuriya in lavish palatial pavilions, enriched the merchants of Sousse and Sfax, and successfully suppressed tribal uprisings in the western marches before his death in 995 AD.
