Archival Overview
The preeminent Maliki legal authority of late 19th-century Morocco, whose encyclopedic nine-volume compendium Al-Mi'yar al-Jadid is the definitive code of Moroccan judicial fatwas.
Biographical Record
Abu Isa Muhammad al-Mahdi al-Wazzani was born in the holy city of Ouazzane and educated at the University of Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, where he attained the supreme judicial chair. Recognized as the greatest Maliki scholar of his era, judges and muftis throughout Morocco and North Africa referred legal disputes to his verdict.
His monumental magnum opus, Al-Nawazil al-Jadida al-Kubra (widely known as Al-Mi'yar al-Jadid), compiled thousands of actual Moroccan judicial cases and fatwas across property law, commercial contracts, family disputes, and water rights, serving as a pillar of Moroccan civil law.
