Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Ali al-Khatib al-Baghdadi was the supreme chronicler of the intellectual life of medieval Baghdad. Traveling widely across Iraq, Syria, and the Hijaz to study under hundreds of masters, he developed an unmatched command of hadith criticism, historiographical methodology, and biographical evaluation.
His monumental fourteen-volume masterpiece, Tarikh Baghdad (The History of Baghdad), comprises over seven thousand eight hundred biographies of scholars, jurists, poets, caliphs, and scientists who lived in or visited the imperial city. It remains one of the finest monuments of medieval Islamic historical scholarship, characterized by meticulous source attribution.
