Biographical Record

Al-Junayd al-Baghdadi (c. 830–910 CE) studied Shafi'i jurisprudence under Abu Thawr before being initiated into spiritual wayfaring by his maternal uncle Sari al-Saqati.

Known as the 'Crown of the Gnostics', he insisted that true mysticism must be controlled by sacred law: 'Our science is bound up with the Quran and the Sunnah; whoever does not know them cannot follow our path.'
