Archival Overview
Centenarian American satirical cartoonist who drew for MAD Magazine for a record 65 years, inventing the legendary "Fold-In" inside back cover and the hilarious recurring feature "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions".
Biographical Record
Abraham Jaffe was born in Savannah, Georgia, to Lithuanian Jewish immigrant parents. In 1927, his mother took him back to Lithuania, where he spent six poverty-stricken years before his father brought him back to New York. He attended the High School of Music & Art alongside future MAD editor Al Feldstein and comic legend Will Eisner.
Jaffee began contributing to MAD Magazine in 1955. In 1964, parodying glossy four-page foldouts in Playboy and Life, Jaffee conceived the MAD Fold-In for the inside back cover: readers folded the illustration into thirds to reveal a hidden satirical drawing and punchline. The Fold-In became MAD's most iconic feature, appearing in nearly 500 issues until Jaffee's retirement in 2020 at age 99. He also delighted millions with his "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" series. In 2016, Guinness World Records officially certified Jaffee as having the longest career as a comic artist in history (73 years and 3 months).
