Archival Overview
The fifteenth and final reigning Sultan of the Idrisid dynasty, who heroically defended Moroccan sovereignty from Hajar an-Nasr until his tragic capture and execution in 985 AD.
Biographical Record
Al-Hasan II ibn Gannun was the final sovereign ruler of the two-hundred-year-old Idrisid dynasty. Ruling from 954 to 974 AD, he fiercely defended the northern mountain reaches of Morocco against imperial armies dispatched by the Umayyad Caliph Al-Hakam II of Cordoba under general Ghalib.
Besieged in Hajar an-Nasr, he negotiated an honorable surrender in 974 AD and was exiled to Cordoba. Attempting a final patriotic rebellion in 985 AD to restore Moroccan independence, he was captured and executed on the orders of the ruthless vizier Almanzor, ending the Idrisid royal reign but immortalizing his name in Moroccan memory.
