Archival Overview
Tenth Idrisid Sultan who raised a national liberation army in the Rif mountains and liberated the imperial capital Fez from Fatimid occupation in 925 AD.
Biographical Record
Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad, known by his popular moniker 'Al-Hajjam', was a charismatic Idrisid prince who refused to accept the foreign subjugation of Morocco by the Fatimid Caliphate. From his redoubts in the Rif mountains, he mobilized Berber tribal warriors and urban resistance cells in Fez.
In 925 AD, Al-Hasan executed a daring military offensive, defeating the Fatimid governor Musa ibn Abi al-Afiya and triumphantly entering Fez to re-establish national sovereignty. Though betrayed and killed in 927 AD, his liberation of Fez remains one of the proudest chapters of early Moroccan resistance.
