Archival Overview
Pre-Islamic poet of the Bakr tribe who spontaneously improvised his majestic eighty-line Mu'allaqah while afflicted with leprosy before King Amr ibn Hind.
Biographical Record
Al-Harith ibn Hilliza al-Yashkuri was a respected elder and chieftain of the Banu Bakr tribe. During peace arbitration before King Amr ibn Hind of Al-Hirah to resolve the long-standing War of Basus, Bakr faced the formidable rhetorical power of Taghlib chieftain Amr ibn Kulthum.
Though suffering from advanced leprosy, Harith stood behind seven silk curtains and spontaneously improvised his majestic, eighty-line Mu'allaqah. His dignified defense of Bakr's loyalty, diplomatic eloquence, and majestic rhythm so deeply moved King Amr that he ordered the curtains removed, awarded victory to Bakr, and ordered the poem embroidered in gold on the Kaaba.
