Ahmad ibn Husayn al-Bayhaqi (994–1066 CE) was an ascetic scholar whose encyclopedic works provided the textual and evidentiary foundation for Shafi'i jurisprudence and Ash'ari theology.

Imam al-Juwayni famously remarked: 'There is no follower of al-Shafi'i who is not indebted to him, except al-Bayhaqi, to whom al-Shafi'i himself is indebted for his defense.'
