Archival Overview
Brilliant Basran polymath and lexicographer whose field expeditions among desert Bedouins founded Arabic zoological science and lexicography.
Biographical Record
Abd al-Malik ibn Qurayb, famous as Al-Asma'i, was born in Basra and studied under the founding grammarians of the Basra school. Known for his astonishing photographic memory, he lived for years among nomadic Bedouin tribes in the Arabian desert, recording rare dialects, proverbs, and poetry directly from the native speakers.
Asma'i served as chief tutor to the sons of Caliph Harun al-Rashid in Baghdad. A pioneer of Arabic natural sciences, he authored the earliest specialized zoological treatises on horses (Kitab al-Khayl), camels (Kitab al-Ibil), and sheep, compiling the celebrated poetic anthology Al-Asma'iyyat, which preserved ninety-two precious early Arabic poems.
