Biographical Record
Akli Yahiatene was born in Boghni in Greater Kabylia. Emigrating to France as a young man, he worked as a laborer in Paris while actively collecting funds and transporting secret documents for the French Federation of the FLN during the War of Independence.
Arrested and imprisoned several times in French jails, he composed the immortal masterpiece 'Yal Menfi' (The Exile)—a song originally honoring 19th-century Algerian freedom fighters deported to New Caledonia that became a global anthem of diaspora longing. Over seven decades, his melodic genius touched generations of Algerians.
