Biographical Record
Akira Toriyama was born in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. After working briefly at an advertising agency designing flyers, he submitted amateur manga to Weekly Shonen Jump. He shot to national fame in 1980 with his comedic science fiction series Dr. Slump, following the misadventures of inventor Senbei Norimaki and his superhuman android girl Arale, winning the Shogakukan Manga Award.
In 1984, inspired by Chinese folklore (Journey to the West) and martial arts films, Toriyama serialized Dragon Ball. Chronicling Son Goku's quest for the seven magical Dragon Balls, the manga ran for eleven years, sold more than 260 million tankobon volumes, and spawned anime adaptations (Dragon Ball Z) that became an unprecedented global entertainment phenomenon. Toriyama was also the legendary lead character designer for video game franchises including Dragon Quest and the seminal RPG Chrono Trigger. In 2019, the French government named him a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. His sudden death in March 2024 triggered worldwide tributes from heads of state, athletes, and millions of fans.
