Archival Overview
Visionary trade union leader who founded the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) in February 1956, tortured to death by colonial paratroopers in 1959.
Biographical Record
Aïssat Idir was born in Djemâa Saharidj in Kabylia and became a leading trade unionist in the state aviation workshop in Algiers. Understanding that the liberation struggle needed a unified national working-class apparatus, he founded the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) on February 24, 1956, under the direction of the FLN.
He affiliated the UGTA with international trade unions, securing worldwide labor boycotts of French colonial shipping. Arrested in May 1956, he was acquitted by a military tribunal in January 1959 but illegally detained by paratroopers who subjected him to horrific burnings and torture, succumbing to his wounds on July 26, 1959.
