Archival Overview

Foundational pioneer of modern Arab women's poetry and feminist thought whose classical divans in Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, and Persian, along with her allegory Mir'at al-Ta'ammul, ignited the literary Nahda for women.

Biographical Record

Daughter of Kurdish-Egyptian scholar Ismail Pasha Taymur and aunt of writer Mahmud Taymur, Aisha Taymur defied traditional feminine embroidery instruction to study classical Arabic literature, Persian, and Quranic sciences in her father's palace library.

Overcoming the tragic deaths of her daughter Tawhida and her husband, she published her landmark poetic divan Hilyat al-Tiraz and the feminist allegorical treatise Mir'at al-Ta'ammul fi al-Umur (The Mirror of Contemplation), forcefully advocating for women's equal rights to higher education decades ahead of her era.
