"The ardine is the heart of the tent; when it sounds, the ancestors gather to listen."

Archival Overview

Renowned female Mauritanian griot and master of the ancestral ardine harp whose powerful, hypnotic vocal renditions preserved the oral epics of the Sahara at world music festivals.

Biographical Record

Belonging to an ancient lineage of Mauritanian musicians, Aïcha Mint Chighaly began playing the fourteen-string calabash harp (ardine) at age seven. She preserved the rare, ancient epic songs commemorating Saharan chivalry and tribal history.

Her international performances at WOMAD and the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris introduced European and global audiences to the spiritual gravity and polyrhythmic genius of female Moorish harp traditions.
