Biographical Record
Ahmed Zahana, known as Ahmed Zabana (1926–1956), was an early activist in the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties (MTLD) and the Secret Organization (OS) in Oran. He was tasked by Larbi Ben M'hidi with leading the opening military operations in the Saint-Lucien sector on November 1, 1954.
Severely wounded in a firefight at Ghar Boudjelida, Zabana was captured, sentenced to death, and subjected to horrific torture. On June 19, 1956, he was led to the guillotine at Barberousse Prison in Algiers; when the blade jammed twice, executioners forced it down a third time. His final letter urging his mother not to weep inspired millions of young Algerians to join the struggle.
