Biographical Record
Born Ahmed Driche Tijani in Marseille to an Algerian father from Mostaganem, he grew up in the historic Medina Jdida quarter of Oran. Deeply inspired by Egyptian maestro Mohammed Abdel Wahab (adopting his stage surname Wahby), he modernized the traditional Bedouin flute and poetry into refined orchestral ballads.
In the 1940s, Wahby recorded immortal standards like Wahran Wahran (Oran, Oran, they changed you from what you were...), an ode lamenting the departure of Algerians to exile. During the War of Independence, Wahby joined the FLN Artistic Troupe in Tunis, touring European, Arab, and Asian capitals to perform and raise funds for the Algerian Revolution.
